Joanne Parke says:
I would just like to write a few lines of thanks about a recent Kumuka Overland Trip that I was part of (Africa in Focus - 9 August to 6 September). Our trip (which started with 20 of us in Johannesburg and ended with 12 of us in Nairobi as some departed for Mozambique and some joined at Victoria Falls) was absolutely superb! The trip was very well organised and the itinerary covers some of the most beautiful places in Southern and Eastern Africa. The included and optional activities are very well-chosen and thoroughly enjoyable, being led by very professional and safe companies and guides. My only slight criticism is that the detailed itinerary brushes over the number of days that will be spent driving. Whilst this is obvious in hindsight, I don’t think I fully appreciated the amount of time that would be spent on the truck. However, the stunning places that we visited far outweigh the pain of the days driving on the truck! I would also like to commend our tour guide and driver who with all their hard work made the trip complete. Mwangi (our tour guide) was accommodating, helpful, well-organised and friendly. He remained calm in stressful situations and always put the group first (particularly when it came to hot showers!). These qualities were particularly noted when one of the girls dislocated her elbow and needed repeated hospital visits and also when the truck was stopped in Tanzania for a number of hours at a government weighbridge due to an (unknown) newly-enforced rule. On both occasions he acted extremely professionally and explained the situation fully to all those involved. In addition, he demonstrated a real pride in his work and was extremely knowledgeable about his country; the animals, history and the geography. After numerous game drives with professional safari guides during the trip, our final one was in Lake Nakuru where we were treated to Mwangi as the guide. The entire group agreed at the end that he was by far the most informative guide that had led a safari drive during the entire trip! Patrick (our tour driver) also showed an incredible amount of pride in his job. Even after a long and arduous day of driving he still had a smile on his face! He drove the truck in a very safe and conscientious manner and never faltered from this, even after 12 hours of driving. He was incredibly responsive to the demands of multiple toilet/game-stop requests and always did his best to please the group. He also remained calm in stressful situations such as the problem at the Tanzania weighbridge and supported Mwangi when appropriate. Both Patrick and Mwangi are incredible assets to Kumuka. Their pride in their work is demonstrated in all of the above but of equal importance was their ability to be relaxed, fun and part of the group; from joining in on the chats and cooking around the campfire to trying to teach us Swahili they made the trip a complete experience. I would like to conclude by thanking Patrick and Mwangi and also the entire team at Kumuka (that I have obviously never met), who as a complete unit made this trip hugely enjoyable. Cheers.
