Selingan
Island is part of the Turtle Islands Park,
located 40km off the coast from Sandakan. The islands and waters surrounding
the park have been designated for the protection of the Green and Hawksbill
turtles that come ashore to nest. You can be almost certain that at least
one turtle will come up to lay its eggs every night of the year. There
is also a hatchery on Selingan where turtle eggs are incubated and after
50-60 days, the hatchlings are released into the open sea.
Accommodation on Selingan Island is extremely limited due to environmental
constraints, and visitors are not allowed to visit the island without
staying overnight as the turtles only come ashore after dark to lay their
eggs. Whilst we will endeavour to organise accommodation for you, this
is subject to availability and is not guaranteed. At certain times of
year, rooms are available within a few weeks of departure, however, in
peak season these can be booked out several months in advance.
Before we can confirm accommodation on the Island,
we will require your full name and payment of the tour deposit or full
payment of the tour.
In the event that accommodation on the island is unavailable, your travel
consultant will advise you of any alternatives. Subject to availability,
Kumuka can book the following alternative options for you:
• Overnight stay at Sepilok Rainforest Lodge
- comfortable accommodation next to the Sepilok Orang Utan Rehabilitation
Centre. This would give you the opportunity to spend additional time
at the Orang Utan Centre or free time to explore Sandakan (taxi transfers
at own expense). In this case you would normally meet your original
group on their return to Sandakan for a second visit to the Orang Utan
Centre. Dinner at Sepilok Lodge is included, as well as the additional
entry to the Orang Utan Centre.
• Return to Kota Kinabalu one day earlier than itinerary (subject
to flight and hotel accommodation availability) and spend one extra
night in Kota Kinabalu, with seafood dinner included, and transfers
to and from the restaurant.
