| Introduction: | Join us on this family adventure to cycle along the Otago Central Rail Trail. The route follows the old Maniototo rail line from Clyde to Middlemarch, and takes you back into New Zealand's rural past. Starting from Christchurch we visit the Orana Wildlife Park, spend a night on a farm, and learn about glaciers at Mt Cook. In Queenstown there is plenty of time for optional activities, and maybe a trip to Milford Sound. Then our cycling adventure begins with chances to explore small towns and abandoned gold diggings along the way, as well as meet local inhabitants, and maybe try the ancient art of curling. We even travel on one of the world's great train trips as we travel on the spectacular Taieri Gorge Railway to Dunedin. A chocolate factory, Living History Show and Blue Penguins Tour are still to come before we finish back in Christchurch.
Please note that although helmets are available for use on tour, you may prefer to bring your own bicycle helmet, especialy for children to ensure correct fitting helmets used. |
| Day 1: | Christchurch. Today is an arrival day into Christchurch. Taxis and shuttles are readily available at the airport.
The pre departure meeting will be held at 6pm in the lobby of the joining hotel, giving you the chance to meet your Local Tour Guide and fellow travellers, and the opportunity to ask any questions.
Christchurch, the largest city in the South Island extends onto the Canterbury Plains, which are cordoned by the Southern Alps. The first settlers arrived at the port of Lyttleton in 1850 and while building the new town, transformed one out of three hectares into gardens and public parks. New Zealand’s English heritage is perhaps more evident in Christchurch than it is almost anywhere else. It is also a vibrant city that has traditionally supported a busy arts community - music, theatre, dance and the visual arts.
If you arrive early you may like to explore. Christchurch Tramway commenced operation on 04 February 1995. History repeated itself with the return of the familiar electric trams which disappeared from the streets of Christchurch in 1954 and now return to link Christchurch's central sites and attractions. The beautifully restored trams follow a 2.5 kilometre loop around central Christchurch taking in some of the most interesting sites. These include Cathedral Square, Aquarium of Discovery, The Arts Centre, Botanic Gardens, Canterbury Museum, Punting on the Avon, Victoria Square, and New Regent Street to name just a few. Using the day pass visitors can hop on and off at any of the nine stops around the inner city tram loop and experience the inner city sights and attractions at their leisure. |
| Day 2: | Christchurch - Orana Wildlife Park, Fairlie - Farm Tour and Farm Stay. This morning we visit the Orana Wildlife Park. There is plenty for visitors to enjoy at the Park with fifteen daily animal feeds, one feed approximately every 40 minutes whilst the Park is open! Orana Wildlife Park specialises in getting visitors “up close and personal with the animals”. Some animal encounters are not offered anywhere else in the world! Hand feed a Giraffe! Meet White Rhinoceros in a face-to-face encounter! Watch a Cheetah sprint! Pat a Llama! An extensive collection of New Zealand native species is of particular appeal for visitors. Observe New Zealand Kiwi, Tuatara and a range of endangered, endemic birds such as Kea, the only alpine parrot in the world. Stroll through the walk-through aviary whilst native birds fly past and listen to their calls. A farmyard area enables visitors to pet a range of domestic animals.
Optional Extra: You can also experience the Lion Encounter Ride a wonderful experience, unique to the Park. Ride on board our specially designed feeding wagon which travels with the Animal Keepers through the African Lion Reserve for close up views of these magnificent creatures feeding - a truly memorable experience! Please note: Subject to availability as there are ticket restrictions. Also participants have to be a minimum height of 1.40m.
After lunch at a winery, we travel to Fairlie with an optional rural cycle on the way. We overnight at a local farm stay with a farm tour as well. (B,L,D) |
| Day 3: | Mt. Cook via Tekapo. This morning we travel to Mt Cook via Tekapo, with an optional cycle along canal roads.
The hot pools at Lake Tekapo are landscaped in local greywacke rock and surrounded by the regions native alpine plants to create a natural setting. Pool temperatures range from forty degrees Celsius to thirty six degrees Celsius. The pools have benched seating around the edges so you can sit back, relax and soak. Each pool offers something different in the latest technology - massage jets to assist in taking away any aches and pains and fountains to splash under. The three main pools have been strategically placed to take best advantage of the wonderful views looking out over Lake Tekapo and the Two Thumb mountain range. The site is surrounded by beautiful Radiata and Douglas fir trees which keep the area relatively windless.
Then on to Mt. Cook where we include a Glacier Explorer Tour. This is the only tour of its kind in New Zealand, and one of three in the world! Very few glaciers terminate into lakes and even fewer of these are accessible to the average person. By using a boat we get close to towering ice-cliffs and huge floating icebergs. The boats provide a safe way to unseen and inaccessible areas of New Zealand's largest glacier.
For this tour you will need to bring:
- Camera, with plenty of film/memory
- An extra warm layer of clothing
- Sun block & Sunglasses
- Waterproof jacket (in case it rains during the walk)
The bus will take you on a pleasant trip to the Tasman Valley, followed by an easy 1/2hr stroll through the National Park. Then board your boat, and enjoy the ever changing ice face of the Tasman Glacier icebergs on the Tasman Glacier Terminal Lake.
Now approximately 27 kilometres long and 600 metres deep the Tasman Glacier is melting and calving at an exponentially increasing rate. In recent years the Tasman Glacier has changed from a 'melting' to a 'calving and melting' terminus, resulting in a terminal lake that is rapidly increasing in size. This results in icebergs of every shape and size imaginable periodically tearing away from the terminal wall of the glacier into the rapidly growing lake below. On either side of the Terminal Lake, lateral moraines rear up 100 metres to remind us of the scale and greatness the glacier has reached in previous times – the last ice age finishing in just 1890! (B) |
| Day 4: | Mt. Cook National Park, Wanaka Puzzling World. This morning after breakfast there is an optional short hike in Mt Cook National Park.
Then we drive to Wanaka and visit Puzzling World. Stuart Landsborough’s Puzzling World is a world unique attraction specialising in puzzling eccentricity. It offers the world's first "modern-styled" Great Maze, incredible Illusion Rooms, eccentric architecture and Oddities. Located in the heart of the breathtaking Southern Lakes region of the South Island of New Zealand, Puzzling World is set amongst 7 acres of rolling lawns, trees and gardens at the entrance to Wanaka, 2kms from the lakefront When you arrive at Puzzling World you will immediately notice the crazy architecture. One building has four eccentric Tumbling Towers. Another one is called the Leaning Tower of Wanaka. This tower has been pulled out of the ground and is balanced on one corner at an unbelievable 53 degrees! The Leaning Tower of Pisa only leans six degrees. There is the Hall of Following Faces, an illusion room where 168 giant models of famous faces seem to turn and follow you around the room. The Ames Forced Perspective Room - the technique of this illusion was used in The Lord of the Rings film to create tall people and little people. The shape of this room is totally distorted although when viewed from outside through a window, the room looks perfectly normal. Prepare to be amazed!
Another attraction is the Tilted House - The room is tilted at an angle of fifteen degrees. All the displays inside are normal yet when you enter the room the illusion is so strong that your brain is convinced the room cannot be sloping. The brain straightens up the room at the expense of the displays that seem to hang at impossible angles.
We have a free afternoon in Wanaka, with the option for hikes and activities - the guide will be available for transport. (B) |
| Day 5: | Wanaka to Queenstown. This morning we travel to Queenstown and the remainder of the day is free for optional activities. There are plenty of family activities available and the guide can advise on these and help arrange bookings. The guide and vehicle will be available for local transport.
Queenstown is an exhilarating year round alpine resort, perfect for adventurers and leisure seekers alike. Nestled on the shores of Lake Wakatipu and overlooked by the majestic Southern Alps, Queenstown's reputation as the adventure capital of the world is well earned. Here you can bungy jump, "fly-by-wire" in your own "rocket", white water raft or surf, jet boat down canyons, or maybe tandem hang-glide. For something a little more sedate, enjoy long walks, a four wheel drive trek, or maybe a cruise on a majestic steamboat. There are many shops, cafes and restaurants as well in Queenstown. (B) |
| Day 6: | Queenstown - Free Day, Optional Day Trip to Milford Sound. Today is a free day in Queenstown to give you the opportunity to try out more of the optional activities, or maybe take an optional one day tour to Milford Sound, either a return trip by coach or a flight one way and coach return trip. Milford Sound is a world-renowned natural wonder. Nowhere else in Fiordland do the mountains stand so tall, straight out of the sea. Luxuriant rainforest clings to sheer rock walls and waterfalls tumble hundreds of metres to the sea below.
No meals are included today - but there are plenty of cafes for breakfast. For those going to Milford Sound, departure is generally around 7am and so they may wish to buy breakfast to take with them. |
| Day 7: | Queenstown to Clyde - Otago Rail Trail. This morning after breakfast we set off for Clyde to start our Otago Rail Trail cycle adventure.
The cycle tour travels through the historic and stunning landscape of Central Otago on 150kms of cycle trails based on the unused railway corridor. The Otago Rail Trail can be accessed throughout the year, and has been specifically created for mountain bikers, walkers and horse riders. The Trail follows the old Central Otago branch railway line from Clyde to Middlemarch passing though many towns along the way. The Rail Trail is a public reserve, and motorised vehicles are not permitted on the Trail and so there are no traffic concerns as you travel the level, gravelled surface. The Rail Trail passes through some spectacular scenery not seen from the highways, ranging from mountain ranges, hills and gorges, across the vast Maniototo plain, through old gold mining towns, ending amongst the fruit growing areas of Central Otago. The heritage of the old railway line has been preserved, with the retention of viaducts and bridges, and some of the old Railway Stations.
We leave Clyde town across the flat rural countryside. From Chatto Creek the trail starts to rise before levelling off to Omakau where we stop for lunch. After lunch the remaining 9km flow under the wheels until we arrive at Lauder. Late afternoon we will take a drive to the historic gold mining village of St. Bathans for a walk around the beautiful blue lake. Weather permitting we might even be able to go for a swim! Our accommodation tonight is generally at the Lauder Railway School. (B, D)
Rail Trail Ride - 44 kms/27 miles |
| Day 8: | Otago Rail Trail. On this day we head inland and ride through the first two tunnels and two rail bridges on the trip. With the willow tree edged gorge below the trail and the welcoming pools beckoning we finally emerge into the scenic Idaburn valley. One last short easy climb takes us to the summit of the trail and the beginning of the downhill descent that will take us first to the art deco township of Ranfurly. We lunch at a local cafe and then a short drive takes us to the beautiful township of Naseby and our hotel stay for the night.
There are some nice local walks around the village, or for the keen cyclist an easy forest trail alongside an old water race. For those wanting to try their hand at something new, we have an option to try the sport of curling in the local indoor rink, the first in the southern hemisphere. (B, D)
Rail Trail Ride - 48 kms/29 miles |
| Day 9: | Otago Rail Trail, Taieri Express. An early start for our longest ride today but it is some of the best riding of the trip. From Waipiata the trail follows the edge of the old lake before entering the Taieri Gorge. The trail crosses through further tunnels and bridges before a fast downhill to the lovely café at the old hotel at Hyde.
From here a final 27kms takes us past the scene of the famous Hyde rail disaster of 1943 and then out onto the rolling plains slowly descending into Middlemarch. This is the end of the trail and time for a celebratory drink at the Kissing Gate Cafe.
However the day is not yet finished and by 4.30pm we join the famous Taieri Express for a spectacular ride through the gorge described as one of the worlds great train journeys. The 58kms of rail travel takes us into Dunedin. The 2-hour route traverses the Taieri gorge travelling across high iron viaducts and tunnels. All trains feature heritage carriages and you may have a viewing carriage on your trip, which provides even better panoramas. The train arrives at the historic Dunedin railway station at 6.30pm in time for a transfer to our accommodation.
Dunedin is known as the Edinburgh of the South. Our dinner tonight is in the form of a group celebration to acknowledge the 150kms of Rail Trail riding. (B, D)
Rail Trail Ride - 59 kms/37 miles |
| Day 10: | Dunedin - Cadbury Chocolate Factory, Oamaru - Living History Show, Blue Penguin Tour. This morning we have breakfast at our accommodation, but remember, don’t eat too much as the next stop is the Cadbury Chocolate Factory! After enjoying the yummy chocolate we jump back in the van and drive on to Moeraki - the home of Moeraki boulders.
After grabbing some lunch there will be plenty of time to explore the boulders or should I say dinosaur eggs!. For those who wish there is the opportunity to do some more cycling. This cycling is along the quiet coastal road heading towards Oamaru. After everyone has had enough cycling we jump back into the van for the last short drive into Oamaru.
After refreshing ourselves at the accommodation we step back in time to the old days of Oamaru. Heading over to the limestone quarter we watch the dramatic true story of Oamaru’s early days in a wonderful show – you might even get to dress up! We then head off to dine in one of New Zealand’s oldest restaurants with a two course traditional meal.
The day is not over yet as we go and view the penguin parade as the enchanting little blue penguins return to their nests at dust to breed, rear their chicks and moult. Eco- tourism at its best. (B,D)
Coastal Rides – up to 30 kms/19 miles |
| Day 11: | Vanished World Trail, Elephant Rocks, Waimate, Christchurch. The last day of the tour today. This morning we head inland to Duntroon along the Vanished World Trail. Here there is the chance to visit the Vanished World Visitor Centre, which has many displays about the areas geological past - and lots of cool fossils!
We then continue on to explore Elephant Rocks. If you are a fan of Narnia and the Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe you will recognise the Elephant Rocks as Aslan’s Camp.
We cycle today alongside the Waitaki River & through the scenic Waimate Gorge to end our cycling at the historic village of Waimate, famed for its local wallaby population. Here there is time for an optional visit to the local wildlife park before driving back to Christchurch, where we will deliver you to your local hotel. (B)
Please Note - Accommodation is not included tonight in Christchurch, but please ensure that you have advised us of your hotel so that we can arrange a drop off. |

We advise that you take copies of relevant pages in your passport and any visas that you may purchase in case of loss or damage. Your tour leader will require your passport details at the pre-departure meeting. Again, we recommend that you have a photocopy of all passport details, kept separate. Your passport must be valid for six months after the END of your tour, and must have one blank page for each country to be visited. |

| Climate: | For detailed climate information see www.kumuka.com.
Travel Tip: Always bring a lightweight, waterproof jacket and/or an umbrella even during the height of summer - this should prepare you for anything! |
| Time: | For detailed information see www.timezoneconverter.com or www.timeanddate.com |
| Books and Reading Material: | You might like to read up on the destinations that you are about to visit as these cities all have interesting sites and histories. We recommend a variety of guidebooks such as Lonely Planet, The Rough Guide and Insight Guides. All these publications have good general information as well as more specific country information that will help orientate you in the countries you visit. |
| Security: | - Do not take unnecessary valuables with you.
- A money belt, or something similar, worn close to your body is the best way to carry passports, airline tickets and money.
- DO NOT leave any valuables in ANY hotel room, please use SAFETY DEPOSIT BOXES. Items are left at the individuals’ risk.
- Pickpockets operate worldwide, you must always exercise care.
- Be aware that anything left lying around could also be liable to theft. |
| Money: | We recommend an average of NZ$50-75 per day. This of course depends on your own spending habits, the number of optional excursions you wish to take and the amount of additional snacks, souvenirs and drinks you wish to buy along the way. Be aware that some towns and cities are more expensive than others. Similarly there will be some days when you may spend nothing at all and others when you exceed your budget.
We advise that you carry a mixture of cash, credit/debit cards and travellers cheques with you on your trip. We suggest that you record your travellers cheque numbers and keep these records separate from your cheques. American Express and Thomas Cook Travellers Cheques are most widely accepted.
Credit cards are accepted virtually everywhere in New Zealand. They can also be used to obtain money from ATMs. You should make sure you know your PIN number. ATM cards can be used widely in New Zealand. Again, you will need your PIN. Your bank will provide you with more details. |
| Luggage and Personal Equipment: | How much should I take?
- Please bring lightweight walking shoes or sandals, and a day sac.
- Because of limited luggage space on transport, we must limit each passenger to ONE main suitcase or frameless backpack and one day bag. Your main bag must not weigh more than 20 kg’s. A frameless or internally framed backpack is the best way to carry your belongings since it is easy to lift on and off vehicles.
- A small daypack is essential for keeping general items (e.g. camera, books, wallets etc.) at hand when your main pack is out of reach. It is also handy for day trips and excursions and when cycling.
- We also recommend that you keep your passport, credit cards travellers checks etc. on you at all times, preferably in a money belt worn under your clothes.
TRAVEL TIP: You might be tempted to buy a few souvenirs here and there, so leave a little room for those extra purchases!! |

Please note that although helmets are available on tour, you may prefer to bring your own bike helmet. |
| Personal Effects: | We suggest that you take into account the time of year you will be travelling, and pack accordingly to the season. Quick drying clothes are recommended, and at many hotels and campsites there are laundry facilities. Your tour leader will advise where this is possible.

For the children: A notebook to record the trip is a great idea - younger children can use it to stick postcards in and draw pictures of what they have seen, while older children will enjoy keeping a diary of everything they have got up to. A cheap digital camera will pay dividends, and you may want to invest in a portable DVD player. Travel games are a good idea for any longer journeys, or free time. |
| Accommodation: | We have put a lot of thought and effort into locating the most appropriate type of accommodation for each tour. It will always be clean, comfortable and of a high standard. On this tour, it will range from hostels and motels, to chalets, cabins and lodges as well as a farm stay. |
| Drug Policy: | Under no circumstances are any illegal drugs allowed on any part of the trip. Anyone discovered in possession of any such drugs, will be asked to leave the tour immediately without question or refund. |
| Optionals: | Kumuka endeavours to advertise a compliment of optional activities available locally during tours with selected ground handlers to make your tour more enjoyable. These ground handlers and activity partners are selected for their standards in quality, professional ability and reputation.
